The American International School of Cape Town (AISCT) is a private, independent, and not-for-profit organization, and sound governance is fundamental to the success of the school. We have a diverse learning community where we aim to provide students with the opportunities and confidence they need to positively impact the world.

麻豆女演员is overseen by a who are responsible for the school鈥檚 fiscal solvency and overall success. As well as having a Board of Governors, 麻豆女演员also convenes a . The School Council is made up of seven members: three community members elected by the school stakeholders, three appointed by the International School Foundation (ISF) Board (including a U.S. Consulate representative), and one faculty representative voted in by the faculty.

The Board and School Council provide strong governance and oversight to the leadership of the Head of School and the school鈥檚 long-term strategy.

Role of a School Board at AISCT

A successful school board can be seen as one that focuses on governance and not on management. Although the 麻豆女演员School Board and School Council provide oversight to the Head of School, their goal is to serve as representatives of the wider community and their perspectives and interests. Their focus is on the strategic future of the school with generative thinking, while the operation of the school remains with the Head of School.

The School Board at 麻豆女演员operates with a self-perpetuating, 鈥渃orporate governance鈥 model, a model endorsed by such organizations as the Council of International Schools and the National Association of Independent Schools. The corporate model of a self-perpetuating board allows the board to choose itself and its successors and to focus largely on the strategic future of the school.

The School Council advises and guides the direction of the school, as outlined in the . Together, the Board of Governors and the School Council work to ensure the highest quality of education for 麻豆女演员students, ensuring sufficient resources to support that education. They provide governance, not management, and serve and represent the interests of all community stakeholders.

Some of their responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing and promoting the overall success and fiscal health of the school;
  • Appointing and evaluating the Head of School who administers school policy;
  • Developing, approving, and ensuring the implementation of school policy and efficient and logical allocation of the school鈥檚 resources;
  • Monitoring the use of the school鈥檚 existing facilities and deciding on new ones to enhance program delivery;
  • Ensuring the maintenance of the school鈥檚 relationships with the government and the Ministry of Education.

Voting and Evaluation

There is also oversight and evaluation of the Board and the Head of School to ensure they continue to serve the school community and stakeholders in the best way possible.

The Board evaluates the Head of School annually, and parents, teachers, and students have the opportunity to evaluate the Board鈥檚 performance in annual surveys. There are also regular open meetings held by the Board to communicate the school鈥檚 financial position and plans for the future.

The parent community has the opportunity to vote in a parent-elected member to the School Council. Each year, several parents self-nominate for this important position to represent the parent community. School Council member elections take place at the start of the academic year in August, followed by a Council meeting in September.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice

The Board of Governors and the School Council consist of a diverse group of members who aim to represent our diverse school community and uphold the school鈥檚 commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice. These governing bodies are supported with greater representation through the Parent and Teacher Association (PATA), as well as the Student Council.

Outstanding Contribution and Community Champion Awards at AISCT /blog-outstanding-contribution-and-community-champion-awards-at-aisct/ Fri, 22 Mar 2024 15:30:57 +0000 /?p=13323

A strong, cohesive community is central to our success at the American International School of Cape Town (AISCT). Each year, we recognize those who have made substantial contributions to our community through two key awards: the Outstanding Contribution Award and the Community Champion Award.

麻豆女演员Community Awards

The Outstanding Contribution Award recognizes an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to AISCT. The award is given annually to a member of the community who embodies the mission and vision of the school, who has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to the school, and who has made a significant, positive, and far-reaching impact on the community.

The Community Champion Award recognizes an individual who has significantly influenced the organization from behind the scenes with a positive attitude, a willingness to help in whatever capacity necessary, and a commitment to excellence.

The school receives several nominations from the school community for both of these awards, and there is a review team that is made up of school-wide representation across a number of community members including a member of the
School Council, a member from the PATA executive team, the High School Student Council President, the Middle School Student Council President, a member of our office staff, and a member from the administration team.

2023 Award Winners

The winner of the Outstanding Contribution Award was Franscois Bezuidenhout. 鈥淢r. B,鈥 as he is affectionately known, has worked at 麻豆女演员since 2015 and served as a music teacher across the school. Most recently, he has been leading the high school marimba and band classes and can be seen showcasing our students’ talents both on campus and around the community.

Some of the nominating comments included the following:

  • Mr. B. constantly goes above and beyond for the high school students and school community in everything he does. He does not seek recognition and is unfaltering in his support and attention to our kids.
  • Mr. B.’s level of devotion and selfless caring for all students and the school itself defines his impeccable character and sets a leadership example for all of us to emulate. I cannot think of anyone whom I have known who is more universally adored and for all the right reasons. If we could all be more like Mr. B., the world would be transformed into an exponentially happier place. Simply put, Mr. B. is exceptionally remarkable and deserves so very much more than we could ever provide him.
  • Mr. B. has shown exceptional dedication and talent in cultivating the skills of his students and inspiring them to reach their full potential. Mr. B.’s passion for music is contagious, and his commitment to excellence is evident in the remarkable progress and achievements of his students. His influence extends far beyond the classroom, and he has touched the lives of countless students.

The winner of the Community Champion Award was Paul Ryan. Mr. Ryan has worked at 麻豆女演员since 2014 within the estate team, starting out as a maintenance member, then driver, and now Deputy Estate Manager. At all the school events, Mr. Ryan leads up all the facility set-up needs.

Some of the nominating comments included the following:

  • Paul Ryan keeps the school running smoothly, helps whenever he is asked, and does whatever he can to make sure that any event or production goes off without an electrical or operational hitch. He has an amazing 鈥渃an do鈥 attitude and has great relationships with those he manages and those he assists. Paul is truly an exemplary person and an amazing Community Champion; the school would not be what it is without him.
  • Paul always brings a positive attitude and impeccable work ethic to any task that comes his way. He is able to organize complex tasks like International Day set-up or innovation term bussing and does so flawlessly and with no expectation for acknowledgement.

We are grateful to Mr. B. and Paul Ryan for all they do for the school, to all those who were nominated, and to those who contribute daily!

鈥淭he awards are a way for us to show our gratitude to the contributions our community members make, and the nomination process also gives our community the chance to recognize key individuals,鈥 shared Head of School Dr. Daniel Jubert.

By: Dr Daniel Jubert, 麻豆女演员Head of School

Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year at AISCT! I am thrilled to be back for my 8th year as Head of School of this incredible community. As we embark on our 26th year, I am filled with anticipation for what lies ahead. The past few years have been a transformative journey, propelling our school to new heights of prominence, resilience, and strength, even in the face of the challenging pandemic period. We begin this school year with record enrollment numbers, a thriving academic environment consistently achieving outstanding results, and an ambitious capital project campaign that will shape our future.

麻豆女演员already boasts a vibrant campus, adorned with unparalleled architecture and beauty. With the recent acquisition of the adjacent land, our school has expanded its footprint to an impressive 24 acres. We can now envision a school with world-class facilities, including an aquatics center, library and media center, expansive sports fields, a state-of-the-art theater, a gymnasium, and a performing arts center. Furthermore, within five years we aim to provide boarding options for high school students and affordable, secure housing for our esteemed staff.

None of these achievements are possible without our incredible community. Our dedicated faculty, hailing from various corners of the world, are committed to delivering a high-quality education to our students. Our support staff, many of whom have been with the school for over a decade, work tirelessly behind the scenes to maintain our campus鈥檚 smooth functioning. Our students, representing over 60 nationalities, create a true international mosaic. Their remarkable achievements and university acceptances to some of the world鈥檚 top institutions are a testament to their exceptional abilities. The invaluable contributions of our parent community, particularly the Parents and Teachers Association (PATA), are evident throughout the year. Moreover, our community partners, including our accrediting body , our , our collaboration with the , and our affiliation with the , ensure that we uphold rigorous international standards.

As one of the oldest and largest international schools in the Western Cape, I am in awe of what 麻豆女演员has accomplished in its history and proud of what we accomplish today in our changing world.

We stand poised to continue our extraordinary progress, firmly positioned for an even brighter future.

Thank you for being part of our community.

Learning at AISCT: Learning through service /learning-at-aisct-learning-through-service/ Mon, 08 May 2023 06:47:18 +0000 https://www.websterstudio.co.za/?p=10449

滨苍听earlier blogs, we spent some time thinking about and听defining what learning means at the American International School of Cape Town (AISCT).听

This is how we define learning:听Learning is the lifelong, dynamic process of acquiring and reflecting on knowledge and skills to make meaning in novel and authentic situations.

Often we default to thinking that most learning takes place in the classroom. However, we know that through service students learn so much more about the world with authentic experiences. AISCT鈥檚 Service Learning Program provides students the opportunities and confidence to positively impact the world through genuine engagement in collaborative and meaningful action.听

Service Learning at AISCT

We ask each student, grade level, or class to design and engage in a service project. They choose a community partner and decide on the scope of their project.

In general, service projects fall into three categories: service to people, to animals, or to the environment. For example, in Grade 2, 麻豆女演员students worked with听. They learned about the environment all year and committed themselves to protecting the biodiversity of our area. They decided to focus on how they could protect the environment of the chacma baboon Tokai troop by addressing the issue of litter.

Elementary students are teaming up with the Tembo Mentorship Programme (one of the ARKYS projects) to create a wildlife-proof bin. This encourages children to actively throw away trash. Students worked on this project every Friday. Read more about听.

The Grade 6 students partnered with the听听(PSFA) which works to ensure children have enough food. 麻豆女演员students participated in Blisters for Bread, a fundraising walk/run. They also helped prepare lunches for the children participating in the PSFA school feeding scheme.听

Middle school students have also worked with the ASPCA to support animal needs and high school students have worked in tutoring projects in local schools.

Impact Projects

Students in grades 11 and 12 work on their Impact Projects. This is designed to allow 11th and 12th graders to demonstrate the skills they have developed in their educational journey to date. Students design a project around the question, 鈥淗ow will you impact your world?鈥澨

They may work individually or in groups beginning in Grade 9, and the final presentation in their senior year is a graduation requirement. The projects are growing in depth and sustainability as students want to ensure that their work continues from year to year. Projects include the Football Initiative, which is in its third year supporting students in a local school; Miracle Kidz, where two groups are working with this organization to tutor students as well as teach swimming; supporting a local village in Tanzania, as well as supporting feminine hygiene in townships. Students are encouraged to explore their interests and to think beyond themselves and how they can contribute to and impact the greater 麻豆女演员community.听

The Benefits of Service Learning

Service learning gives students the opportunity to use the skills they have gained to make a positive impact in the real world. When facilitated well, service-learning opportunities give students a new perspective and support in the fostering of empathy and global citizenship.听

Reflecting On Diversity And Inclusion At AISCT /reflecting-on-diversity-and-inclusion-at-aisct/ Mon, 17 Apr 2023 08:27:01 +0000 https://www.websterstudio.co.za/?p=10490

The American International School of Cape Town (AISCT) is a diverse learning community providing students the opportunity and confidence to positively impact the world. Our focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) has strengthened in recent years, and our Head of School, Dr. Daniel Jubert, recently reflected on the work being done.

Diversity in International Schools

International schools often have diverse communities because families and students join the school from all over the world. However, it is not enough to simply state that a high number of different nationalities makes for a diverse, inclusive, and just school community.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) should be reflected in all aspects of school life, including curriculum and learning, admissions, human resources, sports and ASAs, support for students, families, and staff, and outreach to the greater community.

麻豆女演员has a DEIJ committee which continues to grow in size and now has sub-committees working on specific projects. The committee includes faculty and staff from all divisions, portraying diversity. One recent change was the addition of 鈥淛ustice鈥 to the DEI(J) mix.

鈥淛ustice is about fairness, balance, and dismantling barriers to resources and opportunities in society so that all individuals and communities can live a full and dignified life. Justice requires that we acknowledge how the history of our communities, institutions, and society has shaped the present and that we use this understanding to build a better future. It clearly belongs as part of the greater conversation,鈥 added Dr. Jubert.

Focus on the Whole Community

There has also been a number of tangible changes in and around campus. A team of staff members has worked to help increase the feeling of belongingness among the 麻豆女演员maintenance, custodian, office, IT, learning assistants and interns, teachers, and administrative staff by structuring a number of engaging and purposefully planned activities. These activities have been highly successful in breaking down any barriers there may have been.

Other action items have revolved around the inclusion of all staff for house competitions, additional student voice, feedback, and presentations on DEIJ topics, such as the student-led presentation on gender representation and identification. There has also been more focus in the school newsletter and a commitment to further integrate African arts and culture within the curriculum. There is also continued focus on getting more parent and student involvement within the DEIJ journey as they play a fundamental role in our 麻豆女演员community.

鈥淭he work of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) is the responsibility of every member of our community and is critical for all of us to participate in a complex and interconnected society. I am fully invested to ensure 麻豆女演员both continues this important journey and continues to evolve as we move forward,鈥 shared Dr Jubert.

To learn more about DEIJ at AISCT, visit the听DEIJ webpage听which includes links to our philosophy, policies, action plan, and resources. There is also a spot to leave comments and/or suggestions as we move forward on this journey.

Our 25th Anniversary Year /hello-world/ Tue, 11 Apr 2023 09:55:03 +0000 http://localhost:10004/?p=1

As we bring the year to a close, we want to reflect on what a fantastic year this, our 25th Anniversary year, has been.

We started the year with our inaugural Welcome Back Gala. Our International Day celebration was one of the biggest and most successful events in our history. Both of these events were organized by our PATA team who also hosted several other student and community events throughout the year. There was Thanksgiving Day, fashion shows, the middle school fair, and so much more!

We have seen one of the highest intakes of new students throughout the year, and we welcomed two new exceptional students into the听麻豆女演员scholarship program.

Through your support and generous contributions, we have raised close to R200 000 for the scholarship program and look forward to welcoming another two students next school year.

We also welcomed our newest Grizzly who, through community voting, we have named Grizzy!

School Improvements

One of our major goals this year was a continued focus on standards-based learning and, more specifically, standards-based grading in both middle and high school.听Other strategic focus areas were continued work on听DEIJ (diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice), the learning support program, and the scholarship program.

麻豆女演员also continues to be recognized as an environmentally aware school, having previously been awarded the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa () Eco-Schools Green Flag status and, most recently, the Bronze Award. The Green Flag status award is the highest recognition a school can receive.

We were also excited to announce the ambitious capital project campaign that includes an expansion of our campus size and the construction of a library and media center, an aquatics center, new learning areas, and new sporting areas that will benefit all students.

Graduation 2023

Each year we are immensely proud of our graduates, and this year is no different. Our students have been accepted to colleges and universities around the world.

A few of these include George Washington University (USA), Purdue University (USA), St. Louis University-Madrid (ESP), Northeastern University (USA), EDHEC Business School (FRA), EU Business School (GER), University of Glasgow (UK), Queen鈥檚 University Belfast (UK), University of California-Berkeley (USA), Virginia Polytechnic Institute (USA), Manchester Metropolitan University-School of Architecture (UK), University of Sheffield (UK), University College London (UK), and the University of the Arts London (UK).

We enjoyed celebrating Graduation Day on May 26 and wish them all well as they start their journey into further studies and exploration.

A Moment in History

This year, we celebrated the first quarter century in the evolution of our extraordinary school.听

鈥淥n behalf of the Founding Board, I extend special recognition to those people, past and present, who have contributed to this remarkable institution. From our humble beginnings on Campground Road to the facilities of today, we have been mindful of the unique needs of our community听and have tried our utmost听to meet these challenges to the best of our abilities,鈥 shared Larry Balli, the 麻豆女演员Board Chair. 鈥淲e have successfully achieved, through collaboration and pragmatism,听a product we all take pride in. May all of us continue to strive for the continued success of AISCT, and may all students who pass through our portals benefit from the opportunities offered and remember their Alma Mater fondly.鈥

With our strong foundation, diverse and engaged community, international education and experienced educators, and our students who show up and try their best every day bringing fun, joy, wonder, knowledge, resilience, and purpose to our work, we know that we are set for another great quarter century.

We extend our gratitude to our entire community and partners.听Thank you for a fantastic year and a fantastic school!

Learning at AISCT: What is Innovation Term? /learning-at-aisct-what-is-innovation-term/ Mon, 26 Sep 2022 18:35:51 +0000 https://www.websterstudio.co.za/?p=11644

Each year, in the last term of the year, the American International School of Cape Town (AISCT) hosts Innovation Term. This 12-day program is project-based learning at its best. The projects and programs range from work experience at local companies to experiential trips in Southern Africa. Students can select one of the projects offered by the 麻豆女演员staff, or they can undertake a personalized learning project that interests them.
We have 500 students from over 50 countries, and our Primary School is a close-knit, 200-student-strong community.

Families in our Primary School at 麻豆女演员live throughout Cape Town. Our bus service collects students at their door, but many families live in the beautiful areas around our campus.

Project-based Learning

When students are able to engage in real-world projects in an area that they are passionate about and gain meaning from, it can be some of the most powerful learning. A project-based method facilitates this type of learning as it is explorative, student-led, and focused on key goals and skills.

Project-based learning is hands-on with students engaging in and solving real problems; it is interdisciplinary with students having to engage with the full scope and complexity of the issue. Although it is student-led, it is facilitated by the instructors who help to frame the project and guide students through the process. and has grown to be incorporated in K-12 education around the world.

Project-based learning is something we focus on throughout our teaching and learning at AISCT, but Innovation Term allows students to choose from a wide range of options or create their own projects with the support of their teachers.

The real benefits come when students work on a complex problem or idea. They gain deeper insight, use problem-solving skills, tap into creative-thinking, and collaborate with their peers.

Back to School /back-to-school/ Thu, 04 Aug 2022 18:54:22 +0000 https://www.websterstudio.co.za/?p=11667

Welcome back, AISCT!

We are excited to start the 2022-2023 school year which marks our 25th year anniversary! What started out in 1997 with 18 students in a house in Rondebosch is now one of the oldest and largest international schools in the Western Cape, South Africa.

Students joined us back at school at The American International School of Cape Town (AISCT) on August 2, and it marks a new year and a new chapter for AISCT. It was wonderful to see all of our new and returning families on campus yesterday. We welcomed 79 new students this school year. A very warm welcome to all of our newest Grizzlies!

Reflecting on 25 Years

While the past three years have been especially challenging, the 麻豆女演员community responded to each twist and turn of the pandemic. We have come out of this stronger than ever as a cohesive community and are poised for our best year yet. We have also seen many other successes in the past few years. We launched our scholarship program, supporting youth with limited financial means from previously disenfranchised population groups in South Africa. We sent off hundreds of graduates to universities and opportunities all around the world. We welcomed our youngest learners to the Grizzlies Cubs, and we continue to see all our students flourish in their learning development.

In our first 25 years, we have grown from strength to strength, and that is made possible by our Board of Governors, our leadership team, our teachers and staff, our parents and, of course, our students. For the past few years during COVID-19, the expression 鈥減rogress, not perfection鈥 has been one of our guiding principles. While that has served us exceptionally well, it is now time to turn to a new expression that will guide us into the future.

It鈥檚 a great day to be a Grizzly!

Follow us throughout this year as we honor our history, celebrate our present, and look toward the future.

Welcome Back, Grizzlies!

Congratulations to the 麻豆女演员Class of 2022 /congratulations-to-the-aisct-class-of-2022/ Thu, 09 Jun 2022 18:55:47 +0000 https://www.websterstudio.co.za/?p=11670

This year鈥檚 graduating class consisted of 27 seniors from 17 countries. For our seniors, the past four years have been challenging. What started out as a normal 10th-grade experience quickly turned upside down, and only in the past few months have we returned to a more normalized environment.

Seniors experienced an incredible juxtaposition between the start and end of their high school years, but after navigating their young adult life through this stark contrast, they appear more confident and resilient than ever. This period of time has brought so many different things and to each of them in a different way: loss, grief, hope, helplessness, opportunity, love, focus, friendships, and memories that will last forever.

It has been a transformational journey. During this time, seniors have shifted their priorities, re-evaluated what is important, found their voice, and used their power and influence to positively impact both 麻豆女演员and our surrounding communities. They continued to push and challenge themselves with 96% of the graduates taking three or more Advanced Placement (AP) college-level classes.

It is no wonder they have been accepted to 85 universities in 12 countries and have received over R16 million in scholarships to date.

Offers for South African universities which have later application dates will be received in several months, but for our students looking to go overseas, the opportunities are many. There were multiple offers to Penn State, Syracuse University, Boston University, and Northeastern University, among many other colleges in the USA. There were multiple offers to the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto in Canada. Within the UK, there were offers to Oxford University, SOAS University of London, Cardiff University, Suffolk University, and more. In Europe, offers included Erasmus University, Utrecht University, Geneva School of Business, EU Business School, the University of Malta, and more. Some students are making their way to Australia and New Zealand with offers at the University of Auckland, the University of Queensland, and the University of Sydney. These are only a few of the schools on the extensive list of offers, and some of our students have decided to take a well-deserved gap year or have chosen a non-tertiary path.

Whatever the next steps, they are well-prepared for their lives ahead.

A Message to our Graduates

We are incredibly proud of each and every one of you, not only for your academic achievements but for your perseverance, personal development, global citizenship, and your adaptability. We know great things lie ahead for you. Wherever your path leads, we wish you the very best!

It is an honor to call you all Grizzlies!

Congratulations, Class of 2022!
